Summer may not seem like the time that students want to devote to studying for the SAT or ACT, but these summer months are the ideal time to prepare. Here are three ways that students can prepare for the fall testing season:
1. Answer one practice question each day.
Set an alarm on your phone as a reminder and crack open those SAT or ACT study guides. Do one question each day. You could also check out free practice questions on the SAT or ACT websites.
In addition, the SAT folks at College Readiness have developed an App that provides daily practice for the SAT. This free app, which is available on Apple and Android phones, allows you to:
- Answer an exclusive, official reading, writing and language, or math question.
- Reveal a hint if you’re stuck.
- Read answer explanations and learn from your mistakes.
2. Work one-on-one with a tutor every week.
Read MoreThe summer is a great time to do weekly tutoring sessions. You likely don’t have a full schedule, like you did when you were in school full-time. Having a scheduled tutoring session each week keeps you accountable to study and prepare for the test, and it keeps your mind sharp during those months you are away from classes.
3. Read.
Both the ACT and SAT have a heavy emphasis on reading comprehension, so spend the summer months doing some reading. You’ll improve your reading comprehension and vocabulary. Choose books that are enjoyable, but also worthwhile. Skip the Harry Potter and Hunger Games books this time and go for classics this summer.
Check out this site for a Suggested SAT Reading List, which includes books by Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Mark Twain.
Summer is officially here. You should take time to rest and relax, but also remain engaged with your academics. This is especially important if you are taking the SAT or ACT in the fall. Keep your mind sharp during June, July, and August, and you’ll do great on your SAT come late-August or your ACT come early-September.
